| SDek Rail - Stair Picket Installation |
 |
Step 1: Cut your lower stair post to the correct stair angle. A
grooved post, which is used for glass on stairs is shown in this example but the procedure for an ungrooved picket stair post is exactly the same. Once the
post main body has been cut, insert the black top clip and secure as shown. The top clip must install just below the lowest edge or it will interfere with
the top rail assembly. Secure the top clip with 2 - # 10 x 5/8 drill-x screws. |
 |
Step 2: Sleeve the post down over the post anchor and install
using 6 - # 10 x 5/8 drill-x screws. Be sure to plumb the post with a level when you secure it to the anchor. If your post anchor was installed in the
correct position on the stair tread, the post should be sitting flush and plumb with the stair nosing above. Send two more screws through the back side
of the main post body into this upper stair nosing for added strength. These can be # 8 or # 10 screws and should be in the 1-1/2 inch range. Be careful to
line these screws into the middle of the tread height. You may also wish to pre-drill the nosing to avoid splitting the wood when the screws are sent
through. |
 |
Step 3: Gently place your assembled picket section into position.
Mark or trace the underside of the bottom rail with a pencil - top and side edges. This should be done for both the top and bottom stair
posts. Gently remove the picket section. You should now see a top edge and two side marks on the posts. Measure down from the top edge mark and make a
second line 3/4 inches down for each post. This will be your location of the bottom rail bracket. |
 |
Step 4: Using needle nose pliers, grasp the stair
picket bottom rail bracket, which is an approx. 3/4 tall piece of picket, align flush with the 3/4 inch top mark and secure to the post with
two # 8 x 1 inch drill-x screws. Wood posts will use # 8 x 1-1/2 inch screws. Sleeve the picket section down over the bottom rail brackets. Secure the anchor
rail to the upper and lower stair post. Cut your top rail to length and snap on to the anchor rail. The anchor and top rail should extend past the
lower stair post by approx. 8 - 10 inches so there is frame to grasp when you start up the stairs. Install your top rail end cap to complete. |
